The story of Hot Hits - indeed the story of the budget hit covers album itself - begins with Australian Bill Wellings. Pondering how he might get a start in the record business without star names to record, he hit upon the idea of releasing anonymous cover versions of popular songs, which could be sold more cheaply than the hit versions.
